World Cup Notes: Update On Hot Dutch Girls

Sports Web sites and other media outlets offering even the most basic World Cup coverage were just as ecstatic as Barbara Castelein and Mirthe Nieuwpoort  Tuesday afternoon.

The two Dutch women were cleared of criminal charges in a Johannesburg courtroom, just days after being accused in a beer company's ambush-marketing gag at last week's Denmark-Holland Cup match, The Guardian reported.

The development gave sites everywhere another reason to publish the picture of the gaggle of gals sporting those form-fitting getups in that familiar Dutch orange, and use terms like "Hot Girls" in their cheap headlines.

NOTES FROM ENGLAND: As you know, OGS World Cup writer Steve Susi is wrapping up his whirlwind European tour this week, watching matches at pubs and what not, and sent these emails Monday evening:

"I just landed in London this afternoon and am blown away by how down-spirited the island nation is about their famous football team after two draws. I visited a Sainsbury supermarket here a few hours ago, and walking through the England World Cup merchandise aisle I heard an older guy say to his wife, 'They ought to put all this stuff on clearance.'"

And ...

"In a Notting Hill bar at the moment and just saw this incredibly amazing 'World Cup Managers Fashion Report' that absolutely excoriated Germany's coach Joachim Low, his butt-cut hairdos, and sportcoat/v-neck sweater. I haven't laughed this hard in a while. Like two days. But still, fantastic. (The music bed for the feature was Madonna's "Vogue," FYI.)"

RE: ALL: Susi's second note earned a cheeky reply from OGS Group F correspondent Mike Marshall: "That's awesome they're showcasing Joachim Low. Watching their last match the other day, I was dumbfounded that both he and his assistant were doing some form of Hugo Boss meets Mr. Rogers sweater shit. I'm expecting them to have low-tech head sets, rocking out to Kraftwerk in true Dita Dance Party fashion. They should check out Pep Guardiola for fashion tips."

SUGGESTION BOX: If American football uses seven officials to spy a 100-yard field for NFL games, why do only three zebras patrol a pitch that in international footy can be as gargantuan as 120 yards long and up to 80 yards wide? Should FIFA consider adding more officials to Cup games?

KIT JOKES: I'd heard plenty of jokes about Slovenia's uniforms during their gift of a 2-2 draw with the Americans on Friday, most of which had a Charlie Brown theme. But this Facebook status update from friend Matthew Fenton was too good to ignore: "Some vandal broke into Slovenia's locker room and drew EKGs on their jerseys."

BROOKLYN -- I don't know exactly how many Hot Girls I expect to add to the gallery after Saturday's Army-Navy tilt, so enjoy what looks to be the last good update to your favorite slideshow this season.

I spent the day at Pittsburgh's Heinz Field, watching Cincinnati mount a frantic comeback to win the game, the Big East Conference and the league's automatic BCS bowl bid.

CLEVELAND --  The Thanksgiving holiday has me in the steel belt this week. I'll be bouncing around the next couple of weeks actually between Cleveland to see the family, Morgantown to see the Pittsburgh-West Virginia game Friday and then Pittsburgh for the Dec. 5 game between Cincinnati and Pittsburgh.

But because it's Tuesday, you know it's time for an updated Hot Girls Of College Football gallery.

Please remember that I was at the Harvard-Yale game over the weekend. That's certainly a great rivalry on the football field and in the history books, but not necessarily conducive to galleries of darling women. We all know Ivy League gals are smart, and I'm sure they have great personalities, but even on a sunny, pleasant Saturday afternoon, I was only able to find a small handful of pictures for you.

Here's hoping the Backyard Brawl will be a tad sexier this Friday at Mountaineer Field.

BROOKLYN -- After a nice 36-hour break at home in Brooklyn, I'm ready this morning to head up to New Haven, Conn., where I'll be spending the week in preparation for the great Harvard-Yale rivalry.

If you and your buddies are trying to figure out a college football road trip, TCU isn't a bad spot. They play some pretty good football down there in Fort Worth, and the scenery is outstanding.

Meet Katie Witham Before Everyone Else Does

FORT WORTH, Texas -- The lovely gal pictured at right is Katie Witham, added to the Hot Girls Of College Football gallery about a month ago.

She's also a freelance reporter who could very well attract an Erin Andrews-like following in the next few years as she rises up the ranks on college football sidelines.

But the Ohio native insists she doesn't do it for the pretty. She herself is a former athlete, and told OGS in a recent e-mail interview that if she can't tear up a soccer field anymore, why not earn a living watching it and other sports?

"Let's be honest; it's pretty cool when you can say, 'I just got paid to watch that baseball game?'" she said.

Witham said she's all too aware of the stereotypes often associated with attractive young women reporting from the sidelines of seemingly every televised sporting event.

Many of those women "are in the business just to be on TV and have no real clue about sports. I'm different because I'm a sports fan. I basically grew up at the ball fields watching my older brother and begging my parents to play. I'm truly in this for the sports."

Witham's take seemed genuine when she followed it up with a charming admission that she sure as heck enjoys interviewing hero athletes and chumming it up with other celebrities.

"I went into (sports reporting) to tell stories, but the rubbing elbows part is what makes this such an exciting and popular industry," she said. "It's the icing on the cake, and I love cake."

Sweet as it sounds, Witham keeps her ga-ga in check and tries to keep it professional. She's interviewed the two biggest names in her own favorite sport -- Mia Hamm and David Beckham -- and has even stuck her microphone in the face of California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. That gig was actually the young report-a-nator's first assignment. When she comes down from any anxiety, she remembers she has a job to do.

"I want to be right there, in the middle of the action, seeing it and living it," she said, sounding like we shouldn't expect to see her working the fluffy, red-carpet scene anytime soon. "This is an extremely difficult, cut-throat business and only those who truly love what they're doing will make it."
