PREVIEW, PREDICTION:
Some think the long layoff will hurt the Ducks more because their offense is reliant on sharpness, angles, technique and precision. I am not one of them. I'm more inclined to think Auburn's defensive anchor, tackle Nick Fairley, may have enjoyed himself at a postseason banquet or two or downed a few slices of holiday pie. He's Auburn's best chance to disrupt the Oregon offensive flow, and while he'll be the best defensive player on the field for either side, it wouldn't surprise me to see the Ducks come right out at an even more frenetic pace than usual to see what kind of conditioning they're up against. One of two things will happen: the Lombardi Award winner will tire early and the Ducks will be successful, or Fairley and his linemates will be game and Oregon will have to adjust.

So from a cardiovascular perspective, Oregon is more likely to wear the opponent down. But from a physical point-of-view, I give the edge to Auburn. The war of attrition is even.

If everyone stays healthy and the teams play their respective games, I think Oregon has the slightly better chance of winning. In addition to Fairley being the best defensive player in the game, Auburn quarterback Cam Newton will be the best offensive player of the game. Those kinds of superlatives are nice during awards season, but if your goal is a championship, you need the superior team, and that's where Oregon has the advantage. And back to individual players, Oregon will have the second-best defensive player in the game in Casey Matthews and the second-best offensive player, Heisman third-place finisher LaMichael James.

Newton will make big plays and James will make big plays. So if their achievements cancel each other out, what will be the difference? A Cliff Harris touchdown return, either via punt or interception. Oregon wins, 34-30, in a slightly lower-scoring game than everyone's expecting.

Auburn-Oregon Preview: Stats, Trends & Other Notes

Logo BCS National Championship Game

By JOHN P. WISE
One Great Season

When I was a kid, then-Cleveland Browns coach Sam Rutigliano used to cite a popular brand at the time to describe critical factors in playing winning football.

He said that if his team kept "STPs" to a minimum, then his Browns would be victorious. If Brian Sipe and the fellas allowed fewer sacks and committed fewer turnovers and penalties than the other team, the result often would be a positive one.

And in a game where two teams seem as evenly matched as Auburn and Oregon do, I can't help but think the team that values each possession more, that cherishes the football and doesn't stop itself by making mental mistakes will be the one hoisting that expensive crystal Coaches' Trophy at about midnight Eastern time tonight.

One Great Season

Most of the positional matchups are even or pretty close to it, but this is one area that could be a difference maker in the Jan. 10 BCS National Championship Game.

It's not as if Oregon's aerial attack is among the most dangerous in the country. But I liken it to what we're taught when we pick up a golf club for the first time: You don't have to kill the ball on the tee; you can get a good result just by using good, steady technique.

Auburn's offense isn't the only one expected to present a pick-your-poison affair in the BCS National Championship Game on Monday.

Oregon can beat — hell, crush — opponents with its dangerous running game, but can open things up with a potent aerial attack as well. Regardless of your metric — statistics, overall talent or big-play ability — the Ducks are just as balanced, it not moreso, than Auburn.

Welcome to the 11th of 17 — yep, 17 — BCS National Championship Game preview pieces here on OGS. Each day until Jan. 10, we'll take a comparative look at Auburn and Oregon. Today's 11th topic examines the Auburn pass offense vs. the Oregon pass defense.

By JOHN P. WISE
One Great Season

It's truly a case of pick your poison if you're Oregon and you're trying to figure out which you'd rather try to stop: Auburn's running game or its passing game.

Too often when we celebrate dual-threat quarterbacks, we talk about how dangerous they are with their feet and often overlook that perhaps a kid might be an excellent passer.

Welcome to the 10th of 17 — yep, 17 — BCS National Championship Game preview pieces here on OGS. Each day until Jan. 10, we'll take a comparative look at Auburn and Oregon. Today's 10th topic examines the Auburn rush offense vs. the Oregon rush defense.

By JOHN P. WISE
One Great Season

Just about every matchup is expected to be an intriguing one, but the Auburn rushing attack against the Oregon run-stop will be a neat one to watch.

Oregon's defense, much like its offense, relies less on brut strength and more on speed, conditioning and athleticism. That's not to say the Ducks lack power on that side of the ball, but the oft-used expression "they really fly around" certainly applies to them.

One Great Season

Both head coaches in the BCS National Championship Game made immediate impacts on their programs as first-year leaders in 2009, but only one will be lucky enough to be college football's fourth coach to win a national championship in his second season in the BCS era.

Gene Chizik and Chip Kelly are off to impressive starts at Auburn and Oregon, respectively. Bob Stoops, Jim Tressel and Urban Meyer each won national titles as second-year head coaches.

By JOHN P. WISE
One Great Season

We've already mentioned both Cliff Harris and Josh Huff, and we haven't even talked about special teams. On paper, Oregon looks to have a significant advantage in this area.

Harris returned four punts for touchdowns this year, and averages a staggering 19.5 yards each time. Kenjon Barner — doesn't he just sound fast? — also has a punt return for a score in limited touches. Overall, the Ducks average 18 yards per punt return, double what they allow in coverage.

By JOHN P. WISE
One Great Season

So far we've spent most of our time breaking down personnel, and we'll get to that later, but let's take a look at how Auburn's and Oregon's defensive backs compare statistically, because this disparity might be the biggest between the teams heading into the BCS National Championship Game:

One Great Season

Twenty years ago, then-Cincinnati and now-Harvard coach Tim Murphy explained very thoroughly to me that the great game of football was a few years into a brand new age. America's favorite sport was transforming from a power game to a speed game. And we'll see perfect evidence of that on Jan. 10 when Auburn and Oregon battle for the national championship.

Speed is speed, regardless of what size the package comes in. If you can be both agile and big, more power to you. But again, wheels are wheels and if you've got them in good supply, you're going to do well in space. In its infancy, speed was merely an equalizer. Now, it can win national championships.

We've previewed four positions and singled out game-changers like Auburn's Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Cam Newton and Oregon's electrifying running back LaMichael James.

Today's breakdown of the teams' defensive lines brings us to the BCS National Championship Game's next difference-maker, Auburn tackle Nick Fairley.

By JOHN P. WISE
One Great Season

High-flying offenses don't put up huge numbers without great individual players at the skill positions. The backs and receivers get the headlines and the pretty girls, but they wouldn't do so without the critical contributions of their unheralded buddies on the offensive lines.

Auburn and Oregon both have strong offensive lines. Without them, the Tigers and Ducks wouldn't boast two of the most feared attacks in college football.

Welcome to the third of 17 — yep, 17 — BCS National Championship Game preview pieces here on OGS. Each day until Jan. 10, we'll take a comparative look at Auburn and Oregon. Today's third topic examines each team's receivers.

By JOHN P. WISE
One Great Season

Each team is blessed with a reliable receiving corps, though neither side boasts a terribly prolific passing game.

Auburn and Oregon have good air attacks, but considering both teams value the rush far more than the pass, it's hard to see that one team has a distinct advantage over the other in this area. But if your measurable sways in favor of the team with the best individual receiver, let's talk about Jeff Maehl.

Auburn-Oregon Preview: The Running Backs

Welcome to the second of 17 — yep, 17 — BCS National Championship Game preview pieces here on OGS. Each day until Jan. 10, we'll take a comparative look at Auburn and Oregon. Today's second topic is the running back position.

By JOHN P. WISE
One Great Season

Auburn quarterback Cam Newton was the best player in college football this fall, but a not-too-shabby third-place Heisman finish went to Oregon running back LaMichael James.

James is the best running back in the country. He's small in size but, thanks to some elite-level speed, has a knack for making the big play. He is the perfect type of ballcarrier for the Oregon attack, as well as the poster boy for the evolution of the modern offense.

By JOHN P. WISE

Auburn has the undisputed best player in the country. Cam Newton was a true dual-threat superstar throughout the season and there's no reason to think he won't dazzle once more in the BCS National Championship Game.
