The Daily Q Tile

By JOHN P. WISE
One Great Season

Rashard Mendenhall is the latest pro athlete to make controversial comments through social media. And to have them dissected on ESPN. And to have his team brass issue a statement. And to issue his own statement. I have nothing but respect for the Pittsburgh Steelers organization and I hope the Rooney family stays in charger forever there. I realize the Steelers' response is in line with what any team or company would have done, but why have we gotten comfortable with that trend? Office politics are weak for many reasons, but what's wrong with an employee sharing his opinions in a very popular public forum? If athletes' disclaimed in their Twitter profiles something like "The opinions shared here are not the opinions of my employer," would that be enough to allow the next Mendenhall to speak freely?

The Daily Q Tile

One Great Season

The Daily Q wasn't expecting to spend so much time writing about the Indians and Royals this week, but since we followed the series fairly closely, it's hard not to wonder one thing. At what point do you stop prefacing your baseball opinions with, "I know it's still early?"

Is the argument for a college-football playoff losing steam this offseason? What do you think is the best way to determine a national champion?

Because I know none of you is watching the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs, we can keep talking about the NBA postseason. I will admit it's been an excellent first two days, but can we at least agree that a best-of-seven series in the first round is a little too much? If you could re-organize the format of the NBA Playoffs, how would you do it?

The Daily Q Tile

Because OGS mostly tries to stay away from the hateful, gotcha tone that most sports sites employ, we have no problem with Tom Brady crying on ESPN's "SportsCenter" Tuesday morning. He was recalling a difficult draft-day experience with his family, so we can certainly give him a break, but there was plenty of Brady hate on Twitter and other online destinations today. Why do so many people hate Brady?

I'm not a golf writer, but OGS has watched enough major championships over the years to at least pretend to sound knowledgeable about the gentleman's game. And considering there were five guys at -10 on the back nine at one point, was yesterday's final round the best Sunday at Augusta you can remember?

Kevin Garnett: Not The Only A-Hole In Sports This Week

By JOHN P. WISE
One Great Season

The best trash-talk story I know about is one Reggie Miller shared with ESPN The Magazine some years ago. Dan Patrick asked Miller, a notorious jabbermouth, for the best gem directed at him, rather than by him.

Miller told a great story about Larry Bird, in his prime, at Boston Garden, on Christmas Day. As if the cards weren't totally stacked in No. 33's favor, add to the equation that Miller was a rookie on the Indiana Pacers' bench late in a blowout. Bird caught a pass in the corner in front of the Pacers' bench, launched a three without hesitation, then, with his crooked fingers still in the air, turned to Miller, looked him in the eye and politely wished, "Merry Christmas, bitch." The ball swished through the net a second or two later.

The Daily Q: Is Winning A Skill?

By JOHN P. WISE
One Great Season

I've recently started wondering whether high-level athletes and coaches think winning is a skill.

That was The Daily Q earlier today, and here are a few of the responses via Twitter:

One Great Season

Welcome to the newest feature on One Great Season, called The Daily Q.

Each weekday morning I'll ask a question on Twitter and re-post on Facebook, and compile the replies into one blog post here on OGS later in the day. I'll also look around for relevant quotes by columnists or from sports-minded friends via email.

If you want to join the fun, please follow me on Twitter @onegreatseason and look for a new Daily Q every weekday morning.

Today's question: What did you think of Patrick Peterson's Heisman pose during Saturday's defeat of West Virginia? Weak, funny, cool?
