Steve Lavin Reacts To John Wooden's Death

John Wooden, the UCLA basketball coach who built one of the most dominant dynasties in all of sports, died in Los Angeles Friday night at age 99.

Wooden died of natural causes at the Ronald Reagan Medical Center, where he'd been hospitalized for more than a week, according to the school. He died about four months before his 100th birthday.

The mild-mannered Wizard of Westwood guided his Bruins to 10 national championships, including seven in a row from 1967-73.

Wooden was known for sharing short inspirational or philosophical messages, quoted often by Bill Walton and many of his former star players in ESPN and HBO specials dedicated to one of the greatest coaches in all of sports. Perhaps no coach is revered by those he mentored the way Wooden has been since he coached his last game -- a national championship game win, of course -- 35 years ago.

Another former UCLA coach texted OGS this week when it appeared doubtful that Wooden would survive. Steve Lavin, who coached the Bruins from 1996-2003 after serving five years as an assistant there, wrote, "99 years of goodness ... A generous spirit."

And Friday night, 90 minutes after Wooden's death, Lavin, now the coach at St. John's, wrote back that "Even though we naturally anticipate this, the finality of it hits with the force of a ton of bricks."

Adding Dunlap Would Bring West Coast Feel To NYC

Rico Hines, who played his college basketball at UCLA under coach Steve Lavin, will be an assistant coach under Lavin at St. John's, according to a source with knowledge of the Red Storm basketball program.

The tipster texted OGS late Thursday afternoon saying Hines, who just completed his season as an assistant coach with the NBA's Golden State Warriors, will be Lavin's next hire, but didn't specify when an announcement was expected. Hines, whose bio already has been taken down from the Warriors Web site, played for the Bruins from 1997-2002.

The source also confirmed that Mike Dunlap, who's been rumored to be one of Lavin's hopeful hires since Lavin was hired at St. John's, will take the job in Queens if he doesn't get the head coaching job at Oregon or Colorado. Dunlap, an Alaska native known as a strong Xs and Os guy, has spent much of his coaching career out west, including the 2009-10 season as the associate head coach at Oregon.

Lavin added Tony Chiles, with strong New York ties, to his staff last week and is hoping to lure Maurice Hicks as well.

Hicks is the coach at New York's powerhouse Rice High School, but is interested in the St. John's director of basketball operations job, the source told OGS.
