Jim Nantz: Who Said What On Twitter?

Picture Of Jim Nantz

By JOHN P. WISE
One Great Season

America doesn't hate Jim Nantz, but Twitter does.

As long as he keeps it basic and focuses on the nuts and bolts, Nantz is an excellent play-by-play guy and anyone would love to have his job.

But when he tries to get cute, that's when his many critics grow fangs. The funny thing is, the times where he tries to go off-script are the times when he seems the most painfully rehearsed.

His "Walker, Texas Ranger" and "Top Dog" and "Best In Show" lines only sounded scripted because, well, they were. And Twitter lit him up for it without hesitation. Here's a sampling:

We know you like our Twitter Recap editions, but this one is a little bit different. Enjoy!

St. John's-Rutgers: Who Said What On Twitter?

By JOHN P. WISE
One Great Season

Perhaps you caught the end of the St. John's-Rutgers game in the Big East Tournament on Wednesday. If you did, you shouldn't be surprised to hear that Twitter exploded after officials Jim Burr and Tim Higgins blew the final minute of that otherwise exciting tilt. Here's a sampling:

+ @CKlosterman: "Rutgers-St. John's ended like the gold medal game from the '72 Olympics."

Rich Rodriguez: Who Said What On Twitter?

Picture Of Rich Rodriguez

JOHN P. WISE
One Great Season

Rich Rodriguez was fired as Michigan's head football coach on Tuesday. Not surprisingly, Twitter almost exploded with RichRod jokes and other gags, and they weren't all from Ohio State fans. Or Michigan State fans. Or West Virginia fans.

Take a look:

+ @Craig10TV: "On the 2,600th day since Michigan last beat Ohio State in football, Rich Rodriguez is out. http://is.gd/k6vV0"

+ @BryanDFischer: "If Dave Brandon fired RichRod using the 'It's not you, it's me' line, isn't that appropriate in this case? RRod is a good coach."

Jim Harbaugh: Who Said What On Twitter?

Picture Of Jim Harbaugh

By JOHN P. WISE
One Great Season

The Orange Bowl postgame was as entertaining as the Cardinal's demolition of Virginia Tech. At least on Twitter.

For a couple hours, the endless stream of Tweets about Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh covered everything from his ability to evade questions about his future to what he should have said to Frank Beamer after the game.

Anyway, here's a sampling:

+ @bobwojnowski: "Anyone know what time ESPN is televising the Harbaugh Decision, and whether Jim Gray will ask questions for 16 minutes beforehand?"

Urban Meyer: Who Said What On Twitter?

Picture of Urban Meyer

By JOHN P. WISE
One Great Season

Urban Meyer has set a great example as a championship coach. I hope he can stick to his decision to step down and set another great example as a family man who's OK with leaving the limelight. We've seen far too many people in sports hang on a few too many years, their best days long behind them. But here we have a chance to watch an ultra-competitive guy, a proven winner at an elite level, still in the thick of his prime, do the same away from college football.

Anyway, those are my two cents. Here's what others were saying on Twitter Wednesday afternoon about Meyer's decision to walk away from the University of Florida:

Lebron James: Who Said What On Twitter?

Picture Of Lebron James

By JOHN P. WISE
One Great Season

Lebron James returned to Cleveland to play his former team for the first time since he left the Cavaliers for the Miami Heat Thursday night. As you might imagine, there were a few comments on Twitter here and there as James led the visitors to the blowout victory. Below are some of the better ones I saw:

@daveabarr: "Sorry - lifelong Cavs fan from Bingo Smith to World B. Free, Mark Price and Brad Daugherty to LeBron and now to...JJ Hixson? This is tough"

@HS_BHGP: "Are Mo Williams and Justin Guarini really Cleveland's two best players now? No wonder they're pissed."

Roy Halladay threw a no-hitter Wednesday to lead Philadelphia to a 4-0 win over Cincinnati in Game One of the National League Division Series.

It was the first postseason no-hitter since Don Larsen's perfect game for the New York Yankees in the 1956 World Series. It was also Halladay's first-ever postseason start.

Halladay's only blemish was a fifth-inning walk to Jay Bruce with two outs.

Randy Moss: Who Said What On Twitter?

Picture Of Randy Moss

By JOHN P. WISE
One Great Season

I imagine Randy Moss has overcome the guilt he must have felt after blowing off an interview with OGS last month, but if not, perhaps a trade back to the Minnesota Vikings, for whom he dominated during his first seven NFL seasons, should make him feel better.

Either way, here's what folks were saying on Twitter Wednesday morning about Moss' big trade from New England:

+ @NFLRandR: "guess who visits New England on Halloween? That's right, Randy Moss as Viking! Trick or Treat, Bill Belichick!"

+ @sportsguy33: "So long to the Freak, the best WR we ever had. Top-5 greatest Pats, my lifetime: Brady, Hannah, Tippett, Coates, Moss. Last: Marion Butts."

Cincinnati Reds Win The NL Central: Who Said What On Twitter?

Picture of Cincinnati Reds

By JOHN P. WISE
One Great Season

I lived in Cincinnati for a total of 14 years, and while I never really became a huge Reds fan, I'm glad a lot of good friends and loyal fans got to enjoy a thrilling win and NL Central Division title Tuesday night.

Jay Bruce led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a home run to centerfield to give the home team a 3-2 win, clinching the Reds' first postseason appearance in 15 years.

College Football Movies: Who Said What On Twitter?

By JOHN P. WISE
One Great Season

Inspired by the #cfbnovels thread that blew up on Twitter Wednesday night, I tried to get a little #cfbmovies going on Thursday and, thanks in large part to @MattZemek_CFN, hundreds of gags were flying around the Twitterverse starting at about 10 p.m., also known as the third hour of that painfully boring tilt between Miami and Pittsburgh.

Movies are easier and more fun than books, cuz, you know, all that readin' and stuff. This is college football, and those SEC players aren't exactly being investigated for spending too much time in the library.

College Football Novels: Who Said What On Twitter?

By JOHN P. WISE
One Great Season

A pretty neat thread had some college football writers and fans dropping the funny on Twitter Wednesday night.

Folks were using the names of real novels to headline popular — and better yet, some obscure — college football storylines. Below are some of the better ones I found between 11 p.m. and midnight, before I had to turn my attention to Joaquin Phoenix's visit with David Letterman. Remember, you can always follow OGS on Twitter @onegreatseason.

Braylon Edwards: Who's Saying What On Twitter?

Picture of Braylon Edwards

By JOHN P. WISE
One Great Season

Not surprisingly, the Braylon Edwards DUI story is all over Twitter Tuesday morning. Here's what some people are saying:

+ @EricStangel: "Braylon Edwards arrested for DWI. His blood-alcohol was .16, then they added on another .15 for taunting. Not good."

+ @TimGrahamESPN: "Police decided to give Braylon Edwards a breathalyzer when he got out of his car and two cans of Pabst fell out of his beard."

+ @si_vault: "SI Vault Photo (2008): Ben Roethlisberger and Braylon Edwards attend a party. Hide your daughter and your car keys - http://su.pr/2W23Hb"
