Twitter Recap: Who Said What About Bob Huggins' Ejection?

Bob Huggins

By JOHN P. WISE
One Great Season

A funny thing happened on the way to Connecticut's latest upset of a top-tier Big East team Monday night.

Bob Huggins, coach of the visiting No. 7 West Virginia Mountaineers, got two technical fouls and was automatically ejected.

ESPN had a nice tight shot on Huggins as he was giving official Mike Stuart the business. It didn't look like Huggins was asking if Stuart enjoyed his weekend.

Many Twitter users, including this one, were able to deciper the code Huggins has never been afraid to use on officials for more than two decades. It appeared to include many F-bombs, and ESPN college basketball reporter Andy Katz (@ESPNAndyKatz), seated courtside, Tweeted that "Bob Huggins just used mother and you know what right in Mike Stuart's face. Stuart listened and finally tossed him."

Here's some more of what folks were Tweeting about Huggins in the closing minute of UConn's 73-62 win, another resume builder for the surging Huskies:

@MattZemek_CFN: "I'm reading Bob Huggins's lips, and it's not a pretty sight... errrr, sound..... errrr, sight. You know what I mean."

@OSULighty23: "Huggins a goon lol........... he always let the refs know whats on his mind."

@onegreaseason: "When I used to cover Cincy, a steamed Huggins once told a reporter: 'If I was playing my grandma in checkers, I'd want to bury her ass.'"

@goodmanonfox: "Bob Huggins might have set the record for most F-bombs dropped on a ref and he tossed with two technicals."

@Miss_JenniferC: "I kept waiting for Huggins to flip off the stupid UConn student section as he left lol."

@kevinreitmeyer: "Stay classy Huggins! And you wonder where the students get it from?!"

@ScottBonz: "For those on the highway tonight, namely @asavla. Be safe. An angry and possibly drunk Bob huggins is on the road. Good win."

@WildcatBlueBlog: "Cousins and Bledsoe combined cannot hold a candle to Huggins and his temper. What a mess."

@PJASchultz: "It was kind of a bullshit ejection. Ref was definitely looking for it. ..and I hate Huggins!"

@jhorrigan24: "Did Bob Huggins get ejected for 2 technical fouls or for not wearing a shirt and tie? Class act."

@john_kersten: "Eff uconn. Huggins got tossed so he didn't have to shake (hands with) that ass of a coach Calhoun."

@BlakeMellinger: "Bob Huggins just got tossed at UCONN. The official had no business being at WVU huddle, he instigated the entire confrontation."

@z_timmons: "What's the Vegas over/under on # of miles Huggins makes it before being pulled over for DUI tonight?

@Gabejones23: "Huggins has just been ejected for the same thing Calhoun has done his entire career."

Ohio State Star Evan Turner Hates Purdue's Chris Kramer

Evan Turner

By JOHN P. WISE
One Great Season

Just a few days after four-year starter Chris Kramer helped Purdue hand Ohio State its first home loss of the season, Buckeyes National Player of the Year candidate Evan Turner called Kramer out on Twitter.

At about 1 a.m. Monday, Turner, whose handle is @thekidet, dropped some Twash Talk on the popular, short-form social networking site that read: "reason why chris kramer doesnt guard the other team's best player anymore is because he cant lol."

One Great Season found the jab first and replied to Turner, but got no response from the OSU star, who earlier Sunday had led his Bucks to a gritty win at Michigan State to stay near the top of the Big Ten standings.

YOUR THOUGHTS: Is Evan Turner The Best Player In The Country?

Over the next hour or two, at least a couple other Twitter users picked up on the late-night dig and directed some of their own trash talk toward Turner:

@gbo82: "used to like you honestly...but its clear being a very good player has gone to your head and you are in fact....now a dick."

@zwpeterson: "your a college kid calling another player out on twitter just leave it on the court."

Turner then replied to the above Tweeters:

"@gbo82 I was watchin tv and they said he doesn't guard the other team's best player til the end of the game and that's what made me say it."

"@zwpeterson I said this to his face plenty of times. I wasn't trying to call him out. I was responding to somethin I saw on tv."

And then:

"say one thing and everyone acts like I stole their dog lol. Take it easyyyyy."

Sure Twitter can be a light-hearted, sometimes fun, way to communicate with the mini-masses, but for a high-profile athlete to call out another on Twitter is just ridiculous. Can't we act like grown-ups, like Shaq and Dwight Howard, who are fighting over more important things, like who deserves the "Superman" nickname?

Things I Wish I Could Have Tweeted Saturday

By JOHN P. WISE
One Great Season

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- You know how the SEC has turned the screws on Twitter in-game updates? Well, here are a few short items I would have sent out while standing on the sideline of the Florida-Kentucky game Saturday, expanded because, as you know, One Great Season is a juggernaut that has no limitations.

+ Nice to see old media friends on the sideline before the Florida-Kentucky game.

+ Also nice to see Paul Brown Jr., the Cincinnati Bengals VP of Player Personnel. Our paths have crossed a handful of times over the years, and we visited for a short bit while watching Florida warm up. I sarcastically tipped him off about a hot quarterback named Tebow, and he joked that he thought he'd heard something about a lefty. When I did try to push for a more serious note, perhaps a quote about an attractive player he might have his eye on for the men in stripes just up I-75, he kept it close to the vest.

+ Leading 24-0, Florida took possession at about midfield with a minute left in the first quarter. I picked up my gear and began to hustle toward the other end zone, anticipating the next Gator touchdown. Of course, Tebow didn't want to wait for the second quarter. Instead, he dropped a 44-yard touchdown pass over the middle to tight end Aaron Hernandez on the last play of the opening quarter, completing a 31-point explosion to start the game.

+ My shirts were soaked on Saturday. Was it because it rained during the game? Of course not. It was because the local meteorologists said it was going to rain, so I began my tailgate coverage four hours before kickoff sporting my rain gear. By the second quarter, I yanked off the weak yellow rubber slicker, and sure enough, both shirts underneath were drenched from sweat. It was dry during the entire game -- beautiful football weather, in fact. Thanks, weather people.

+ As the final minutes ticked down at Commonwealth Stadium, Florida's gigantic linebacker Brandon Spikes led a laid-back defense in some light-hearted sideline shenanigans. Before walking away from the fellas, he hit teammate Major Wright in the balls.

+ Listening to the postgame radio show while navigating Lexington traffic, UK callers seemed to find a silver lining in the fact that many Kentucky fans applauded when Tebow stood on his feet after that crushing third-quarter hit that left him concussed. That's when you know your team's football was pretty bad, and that maybe your behavioral expectations are otherwise pretty low.

+ PS, a guy from the Cincinnati chapter of the Florida alumni group heard me on the radio in Cincinnati a couple weeks ago and invited me to his crew's tailgate party. The gathering was mostly made up of guys in their 40s, and when a pair of darling UK co-eds strolled past their bus and cornhole game, one of the dudes swigged his beer and offered, "Man, I just love college football."
