Cal QB Kevin Riley Anxious For Redemption

By JOHN P. WISE
One Great Season

BERKELEY, Calif. -- Heading into the season, many thought the USC-Cal game on Oct. 3 would prove to be the biggest in the PAC 10, giving the winner the early inside track to a conference championship.

But USC suffered a surprise loss at Washington in Week 3, and Cal followed a week later with a surprising blowout loss at the hands of an embattled Oregon team.

So now that the Trojans and Bears each have a loss under their belts, Saturday's tilt at Memorial Stadium is even more critical. Cal quarterback Kevin Riley said Tuesday that all was not lost after the debacle at Oregon, adding that this weekend provides a quick chance for redemption.

It is fair to say nobody knows how Cal will come out and play this week. Frankly, there are way more reasons to think Cal will lose and play another poor game, than think they will come our inspired and win. USC does not appear to be equipped to do what Oregon did from an offensive standpoint, but its defense is better than the Oregon team's that held Cal to 3 points and didn't let Cal past its own 25 yard line Saturday.

Enjoy your trip to the game. Berkeley may not have a great tailgating area, but few campuses have as many bars and restaurants for you to patronize on Gameday.
