BCS Bowl Game Projections: Week 12

Picture Of The Coaches' Trophy

By JOHN P. WISE
One Great Season

Poor TCU. After blasting Utah two weeks ago, many thought Gary Patterson's Horned Frogs were the top non-AQ squad.

But then TCU struggled in a narrow win over San Diego State on Saturday, and the three best teams the Horned Frogs have beaten this year all lost. Add to that the fact that TCU only has one game left, and Boise State has three, and you can't help but give the non-AQ nod to the Broncos.

Rose Bowl — Wisconsin beats Boise State. The Badgers put up 83 points without star running back John Clay on Saturday. I think Wisky's balance is just as impressive as Boise's. The Badgers get the win in a very competitive grandaddy of 'em all.

Fiesta Bowl — Nebraska beats Pittsburgh. The more I watch the Big East, the more I wonder what that league's identity is. Nebraska is far superior and will embarrass the Panthers on national television.

Orange Bowl — Virginia Tech beats Oklahoma State. I had a second non-AQ team in this slot the last two weeks, but it's hard to argue with what Mike Gundy, now 43, and his Cowboys are doing in Stillwater. The Hokies have been impressive since their 0-2 start, however, and I think they'd squeak by Oklahoma State.

Sugar Bowl — LSU beats Ohio State. The Buckeyes looked nice in the second half of what turned out to be a blowout of an improving Penn State team on Saturday. But until I see them play their A game against a good team — perhaps this weekend at Iowa? — I'm not going to be convinced that they can beat an elite SEC side.

BCS National Championship Game — Oregon defeats Auburn. I just checked weather.com and it turns out the sky has not fallen in Eugene. A narrow win at California Saturday is hardly reason to panic. The Ducks are the best team in the country, and while they probably won't stop Cam Newton, they'll outscore the one-man show known as the Tigers. This could be the highest-scoring title game yet in the BCS era.
