Legends, Leaders Are The Two New Big Ten Division Names

New Big Ten Logo

By JOHN P. WISE
One Great Season

The only things more disappointing than the Big Ten's new logo released Monday were the names of the league's two new divisions, announced moments later.

Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska and Northwestern will comprise the Legends Division.

Illinois, Indiana, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue and Wisconsin will compete in the Leaders Division.

The divisional winners will meet in the Big Ten's first football championship game in Indianapolis next December. The winner will hoist the Stagg-Paterno Trophy. And the MVP of that game will take home the Grange-Griffin Trophy.

The league's top mentor will be awarded the Hayes-Schembechler Coach Of The Year Award.

As you might expect, anyone who doesn't work for the Big Ten office hates the Legends & Leaders names. Here's a sampling of some of the comedy delivered on Twitter immediately following Al Capone's vault opening Jim Delany's announcement:

+ @BryanDFischer: "Just typed in legends and leaders into Google: 1st result was San Jose Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce, 2nd was Breakfast Lecture series."

+ @jdubs88: "I'm thinking Delany goes Wrigley Field Classic on these names and decides something different 2moro. Am with @ralphDrussoAP Lakes and Plains"

+ @bomani_jones: "I think the big ten should have run these division names by an intern first, to see how folks under 60 felt"

+ @dennisdoddcbs: "All these names -- Kinnick, Stagg, Paterno -- would have been great names for divisions."

+ @DufresneLATimes: "Big Ten obviously rejected my name for one Division: Road Kill (Gophers, Badgers,Wolverines,Wildcats, Nit Lions). Short one 'varment'"

+ @ourhonordefend: "Antwaan Randle-El gets his own trophy name? Boy, is the Big Ten reaching to make everyone happy..."

+ @DanBeebe: "The Big XII is proud to announce its two new divisions: Hookemhorns and Effyounebraska."

+ @RyanMcGeeESPN: "Hearing that the Pac-12 will rename its divisions Dude and Bro."

+ @Dan_Rubenstein: "Chance that 'Legends and Liters' becomes a drinking game in every Wisconsin frat house? 478%?"

+ @LostLettermen: "Jim Delany is one of the big reasons we don't have a playoff. If he's the 'smartest man' in the NCAA room, we should be worried"

+ @brendanloy: "How is it that so many people can spend so much time thinking about something so important & decide something so dumb? #BigTenDivisionNames"

+ @darrenrovell: "Wonder if Big Ten is going to change shape of ball and field too. What a debacle."

+ @lionsinwinter: "This is what happens when rich old white dudes try to be 'dynamic.' Buffoonery. #bigten"
