March Madness Notebook: Day 2

Picture Of Bob Huggins

By JOHN P. WISE
One Great Season

We saw more failures than successes in last night's games involving bubble teams. Plus, BYU suspended its best player not named Jimmer.

But college basketball wasn't all doom and gloom Monday night. No. 1 Ohio State got a record-setting performance from its record-setting three-point expert. And, keeping in the Big Ten, can you imagine Purdue with Robbie Hummel this year? E'Twaun Moore and JaJuan Johnson might be the best 1-2 punch in the country. And don't forget to watch the video at the end of this post!

Last Night's Headlines
+ Virginia Tech surprised no one by following its upset of then-No. 1 Duke with a home loss to fellow bubbler Boston College.
+ Baylor missed a great chance to solidify an NCAA invitation by losing at Oklahoma State.
+ Illinois and Alabama also missed good chances to bolster their tournament resumes with road losses at league rivals.

Top Four Seeds
+ EAST — Ohio State: A home date with Wisconsin on Sunday is all that stands between the Buckeyes and an outright Big Ten championship.
+ SOUTHEAST — Duke: Still a toss-up with Pittsburgh; one will get the No. 1 seed here; the other will get the No. 2 out west.
+ SOUTHWEST — Kansas: I think the Jayhawks are the OGS early pick to cut down the nets in Houston.
+ WEST — BYU: Fran Fraschilla calls the loss of Brandon Davies a "crushing blow." I couldn't agree more.

On The Bubble
+ Boston College — The win at VaTech was nice, but now the Eagles must beat a weak Wake Forest team on Sunday and probably win two games at the ACC Tournament.

Work To Do
+ Baylor — I usually hate the "must-win" cliche, but the Bears should consider themselves on notice. A defeat of No. 8 Texas on Saturday is required.

Today's Top Read
+ I'll be keeping this column college basketball-centric, but SI.com released an oustanding "College Football And Crime" report today that is must-read material.

What To Watch Tonight
+ Texas A&M at Kansas, ESPN2, 9 p.m.

Your Tournament Video Of The Day
UConn's Richard Hamilton hits a fallaway 10-footer at the buzzer to dash the upset hopes of 11th-seeded Washington in a 1998 Sweet Sixteen game in Greensboro, N.C.
